LALKA NOVA 1
Description of the film about the Lalka Nova 1 conference
A four-and-a-half-minute film consisting of short interviews with participants and dynamic editing of shots presenting the events taking place during the conference. Beginning of the film: two people looking at a black-and-white conference poster with the inscription LALKA NOVA, close-up of the poster. In a dark room, a 3D printer is moving – transparent, small elements are being produced. A sign with a QR code and the hashtag lalkanova. Again, a dark room lit by ceiling spotlights – a laboratory: a 3D printer printing yellow, rectangular elements, people in white coats and masks standing in front of 3D printers lying on large tables, various devices on the screen in the background. Next shots: the audience in the theatre hall – a performance: a blonde woman sitting on her heels on the floor, touching her face with her hands. Then the woman animates a grey, human-sized puppet representing a naked woman, holding and raising the puppet's hand, talking to the puppet. The first part of an interview with the Dean of the Puppetry Department of the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow – Wrocław Branch, Prof. Ewelina Ciszewska. During the interview, an excerpt from the Dean's speech, people viewing the poster exhibition. The narrative changes, another voice: in the background, a woman with a microphone standing on stage and a man with a doll's head with yellow hair walking up the steps in the audience. Two people, on the left a man wearing a doll's head depicting an elderly, greying man with wrinkles on his cheeks, on the right a woman wearing a doll's head depicting a woman with yellow hair, blue clips on her ears and bright pink on her cheeks. The woman moves her fingers, the man supports the doll's chin. Next shot: a woman wearing glasses and a patterned, multicoloured shirt speaks on stage, gesturing. An excerpt from an interview with the woman from the previous shot – director and playwright Katarzyna Hora. Change of narrative, again the woman with a grey, human-sized doll on the theatre stage. An excerpt from an interview with actress and lecturer at the Theatre Academy Natalia Sakowicz, the woman holds the doll by the back of its head and with her hand on its stomach, animating it. The doll turns its head towards the speaker. A short shot showing the audience and a fragment of the performance: the doll is animated, it touches its chest, opens its mouth, and looks as if it is breathing deeply. Back to the interview, the large grey doll touches the cheek of a blonde woman with its hand and turns her head towards it. Change of narrative. A man during a lecture, behind him on the screen a slide presenting Japanese theatre masks, then fragments of lectures by two women and a shot showing people listening in the audience, a frame with a person taking a photo of the presentation displayed on the screen. Subsequent shots: logos of the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts and the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology on a white background, young people in the audience, foyer with posters hanging on the walls. Excerpt from an interview with Dr Jakub Karpoluk. More shots of the audience, then a camera preview: on the display we see a woman with light hair standing in the middle of the stage and a man with an instrument on the side. The interior of the theatre hall, abstract, colourful lines are displayed on the screen at the back of the stage: orange, yellow, white, after a moment the camera shows the centre of the stage: a woman standing in a dark outfit, wearing black virtual reality goggles. At the side, in the background, an instrumentalist. The camera angle changes, and on the screen a grey-haired man in glasses gives a speech, next to him a card with symbols resembling pictographic writing. Again, the woman wearing virtual reality goggles. She is standing on the theatre stage, holding a round virtual reality controller in her hand. In the background, a man playing the double bass. In the next shot, an exhibition of black and white posters promoting the conference. Change of narrative, another excerpt from the interview with Dean Ewelina Ciszewska. The interior of a theatre hall, two people standing at tables with instruments for 3D printing dolls. Another close-up of a printer printing yellow elements. People are standing around the table, watching the production process. Another shot - again black and white posters of the Conference. Close-up of one of the posters, with the inscription above it: ‘In order to capture the Nova Doll in any framework, one must admit to oneself the futility of such an undertaking. It will always be a framework composed of paradox and antinomy, negation and resignation. Apophatic ontology. A black rectangle on a white background.’ Another shot shows people sitting in a theatre hall on red armchairs. The last shot shows a theatre hall with spotlights on the ceiling and tables in the centre with a 3D printer and materials for doll production.
